Zurucuáin/Zurukuain is a great place to visit year-round. Spring and fall are ideal for exploring the surrounding trails and discovering the valley’s agricultural landscape in mild temperatures. Zurucuáin/Zurukuain is one of the towns in the Yerri Valley that best combines rural life, historical heritage, and proximity to Estella-Lizarra. Located in the southern part of the valley, on the banks of the Iranzu River and just six kilometers from the city of Estella, it is a place that has managed to grow without losing its identity.
The town’s main heritage landmark is the Church of the Purification of Our Lady, a 13th-century Proto-Gothic structure that dominates the townscape. Renovated in the early 17th century, it preserves elements of great interest both on the exterior and inside, where different artistic periods coexist, reflecting the town’s long history. A stroll through its streets also reveals buildings bearing coats of arms from the 16th and 17th centuries, a testament to a past deeply rooted in the land.
Trails branch out from the village itself, connecting to the agricultural landscape of southern Yerri and to traditional footpaths that offer insight into the relationship between the village and its surrounding territory. Nearby lies the abandoned village of Montalbán, a place steeped in history, where the ruins of the Romanesque church of San Martín de Montalbán remain; recently restored, it has now become a pleasant destination for walks from the village.
Zurucuáin/Zurukuain is also a young and growing village, with a vibrant social life and a strong sense of community. Traditional festivals and celebrations mark the calendar, with particularly notable events in the summer and on special dates such as Candlemas. The presence of the Basque language, community involvement, and care for public spaces are all part of its current identity.
