Más información

Ubago is part of a region where small villages retain a strong identity, rooted in the landscape, history, and shared traditions. It is a district within the Municipality of Mendaza, along with Acedo, Asarta, and Mendaza itself. Located in the La Berrueza Valley and at the foot of the Codés, Lóquiz, and Cábrega mountain ranges, the village overlooks some of the region’s major landmarks, such as Mount Yoar and the Monastery of San Gregorio Ostiense.

The village is laid out in a simple, linear fashion along its main street (Calle Mayor), flanked by traditional reddish-hued houses, wrought-iron balconies, and coats of arms that recall its feudal past. In the center, the square and communal spaces—such as the washhouse fountain—continue to serve as gathering places and the heart of neighborhood life.

The village’s skyline is dominated by the Church of San Martín de Tours, a late 12th-century Romanesque church that combines simplicity with unique details. Its apse, carved capitals, and bell gable stand out against the townscape and connect Ubago to the region’s medieval history. From the edge of the town center, the views toward Mount Yoar reinforce the feeling of being in a place where the landscape is part of everyday life.

The pilgrimages to San Gregorio Ostiense and the shrine of the Virgin of Codés mark the festival calendar and connect the village with places of deep spiritual and cultural significance in the region. The patron saint festivities of San Martín, held in August, are the highlight of the social calendar, while the town’s public spaces remain the heart of community gatherings and daily life in the municipality.
