Más información

Murugarren is a village in the Yerri Valley that retains the essence of Navarre’s rural municipalities. Located in the central-western part of the valley, just five kilometers from Estella-Lizarra, it offers a perfect balance between nature, heritage, and proximity to the region’s main services.

Murugarren was part of the sphere of influence of the Iranzu Monastery, to which it paid a tithe, as recorded in an inventory of its assets dated 1582. This connection attests to the village’s historical importance within the valley’s economic and territorial organization.

The village is situated on a hillside, with a terraced town center that follows the contours of the terrain. Its streets are lined with preserved stone houses bearing coats of arms from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, reflecting its history. The village maintains a serene atmosphere, ideal for those who enjoy peaceful walks in the open air.

In the center of the village stands the Church of San Román, built in the 16th century. Featuring a barrel vault, its floor plan consists of a single nave divided into four sections, with side niches and a polygonal apse. On the outskirts, perched on a hill, stands the San Cristóbal Hermitage. With its rustic, folk-style masonry, it blends seamlessly into the landscape and remains a gathering place linked to folk traditions and pilgrimages.

Among Murugarren’s treasures, its ancient cistern stands out: a traditional reservoir—usually underground or semi-buried—designed to collect and store rainwater or runoff, often covered by a barrel vault. Its presence, at a location where the terrain facilitates water collection, reflects the importance of this resource and of communal management in a village that knew how to adapt to and make the most of its environment.

Murugarren is also a vibrant village. Its patron saint festivities in late August and the celebrations in honor of San Román in November strengthen the sense of community. The local cider house and rural lodging provide activity and a warm welcome, maintaining the hospitality so characteristic of the valley.
