Genevilla is a small village north of the Sierra de Codés that invites visitors to pause and enjoy the silence, the water, and the scenery. With its village layout organized into four parallel streets and surrounded by forests and mountains, this town in the Aguilar Valley retains a serene character that is ideal for those seeking nature, heritage, and pure tranquility.
The heart of the village is dominated by the Church of San Esteban, a 13th-century Proto-Gothic structure renovated in the 16th century, which houses one of Navarre’s most important main altarpieces, comparable to that of Lapoblación. Also noteworthy are the altarpiece of San Juan Bautista and the Gothic carving of the Virgen del Encinedo, as well as ancient hermitages linked to the town’s religious history. Genevilla was also once a royal domain, with a documented history dating back to the early centuries of the Kingdom of Navarre.
Water is one of Genevilla’s defining characteristics and a source of pride for its residents. Just a few meters from the town center lies the source of the Nacelagua, a river whose waters spring directly from the rock and are considered by locals to be the clearest and purest in the area. This spring feeds streams, small waterfalls, and designated picnic areas, creating a refreshing and unique landscape within the Sierra de Codés.
Hiking trails depart from the town itself, winding through the Sierra Chiquita and forests of holm oaks, oaks, and beech trees, offering spectacular views of Mount Ioar and the entire mountain range.
