Galdeano is a municipality in the Allín Valley located at an elevation of 455 meters, on the southern slope of the Sierra de Lóquiz and a few kilometers from Estella-Lizarra. Documented as a settlement since the Middle Ages and once home to noble families, the village retains the traditional layout of the small towns in the valley, opening out onto the agricultural and forested landscape that characterizes this part of Tierra Estella. Its location, like a natural balcony overlooking the valley, offers insight into the close relationship between the historic settlement and the lushly vegetated terrain that surrounds it.
The main heritage landmark is the Cabo de Armería de Galdeano Palace, a 16th-century Renaissance building considered one of the region’s most outstanding civil structures, linked to the ancient local lineage. Next to it stands the Church of St. Peter the Apostle, whose medieval origins and subsequent Gothic-Renaissance renovations make it one of the valley’s historic churches. The nearby mountainous area is also home to the Chapel of San Cosme and San Damián, a traditional religious site associated with ancient pilgrimages.
The landscape surrounding the municipality is characterized by oak groves, pastures, and the rugged terrain of the Sierra de Lóquiz, an area crisscrossed by rural roads and mountain trails that connect to other villages in the valley and to the region’s nature trails. Every fall, this setting becomes the venue for the Basajaun Trail Race, a mountain running event that follows the trails of Lóquiz and brings together runners and visitors drawn by the uniqueness of the course and the region’s scenic beauty.
Local life follows the rhythm typical of the small municipalities of Allín, with patron saint festivities centered on Saint Peter, neighborhood gatherings, and activities organized by the village association, which serves as a community meeting place.
