Armañanzas preserves traces of its noble past through the Casa Grande, a former 17th-century Baroque palace, and the memory of the now-vanished 12th-century medieval palace, linked to the political history of the ancient Kingdom of Navarre.

Más información

Armañanzas is a small town situated at the foot of the Sierra de Codés, in a rural setting that combines agricultural landscape and historical heritage. Perched on a small hill between two gentle slopes, its silhouette is recognizable from afar thanks to the dominant presence of the Church of Santa María, one of the most notable monumental buildings in the area, whose interior houses one of the finest 18th-century Plateresque main altarpieces in the Merindad de Estella.

Despite its small size, Armañanzas preserves a civil heritage that bears witness to its noble past. The main façade of the former 17th-century Baroque palace, known as the Casa Grande, still stands. A short distance away lies the site of the 12th-century medieval palace—now lost—which recalls the existence of a feudal lineage linked to the town’s early history and the political events of the Kingdom of Navarre.

The natural surroundings are characterized by rolling dryland slopes, fields of grain, vineyards, and olive groves, as well as the Linares River, which flows through the municipal area and provides a fertile strip historically used for vegetable gardens. Its proximity to the Sierra de Codés makes the town a peaceful base from which to explore this natural area and the landscapes connecting Navarre with La Rioja.

Armañanzas shares with other villages in the Cinco Villas a festival calendar shaped by the agricultural cycle and religious celebrations, which fosters a common regional identity and brings neighboring towns together. Summer patron saint festivals, San Isidro, and Holy Week are all part of this shared calendar. In Armañanzas, these celebrations take on a character all their own, particularly through its ancient brotherhoods—such as those of Santa Vera Cruz and San Juan—and deeply rooted community traditions that strengthen the bond between the town, its history, and its people.
